Antique onyx and pearl mourning locket

From the Georgian to the Victorian eras, mourning jewellery was a lovely and sweet way to remember the passing of a loved one and here is a very beautiful antique onyx and pearl mourning locket.

Queen Victoria herself made them even more popular when Prince Albert died in 1861 and she herself spent the rest of her life wearing black including her mourning jewellery.

And this can be seen here in this antique mourning locket which dates from the Victorian era and comes from the 1890's and in a sense embraces the love at the time for black mourning jewellery which in this locket is highlighted with a gorgeous star burst design set with natural seed pearls of graduating size.

The locket measures 35.8mm across by 46.1mm or 56.3mm to the top of the bail and the reverse side shows a locket compartment for a photo or lock of hair of a loved one.

Not to be think of as morbid in anyway, these were really the only way to remember a loved one in a time well before computers and the ease of photography as it is now.

This is a wonderful example of an onyx and pearl mourning locket and one that is in perfect condition.
