Art Deco rock crystal ruby and diamond pendant of a cherub
This Art Deco rock crystal ruby and diamond pendant of a cherub is quite simply a masterpiece in jewellery and is breathtaking to admire from near or afar.
Absolutely exquisitely made in the 1920’s in platinum, the expert hand carving of a cherub is incredible and has actually been reverse carved, meaning that it was carved from behind. More than likely this would have been carved in Idar-Oberstein in Germany which for centuries has been renowned as the place for superb quality carvings. Pieces from Idar-Oberstein have been sent all around the world to be set into jewellery such as this pendant here.
The carving of the cherub is so precise and detailed and when you think that this was not only carved by hand, but also in reverse it is even more amazing. Rock crystal is from the quartz family and has been used for carvings for centuries due to its hardness and wonderful clear optical properties.
Set entirely in platinum which was the most popular precious metal during the 1920’s Art Deco era, platinum has the wonderful ability to be made into a very fine wire, all the while being able to retain its strength to support and hold the rubies and diamonds set into this pendant.
Surrounding the pendant on each side are thirteen rubies which stand out so well against the pure white of the platinum and then the pendant is highlighted with seventeen diamonds that sparkle in the light so beautifully.
With the pendant measuring 18.7mm wide at the centre by 59mm from the bottom to the top of the bail, it is set on a 54cm 14ct white gold chain that is set with a platinum slide that itself is set with six more diamonds and three more rubies and accentuate the pendant just perfectly. The way this slide can move up and down the chain highlights the quality and thought that went into making this piece and shows just why Art Deco jewellery is so special.
This is easily one of the finest Art Deco pendants that you could ever find and is just incredible from any angle that you look at it. Stock# ES7309 Circa: 1920 $Sold.
