Antique carnelian seal
Seals have been used as far back as Roman times, and were originally used to literally “seal” an envelope by pressing it down on an envelope that has wax melted onto it, that while still warm is then pressed to prevent the wrong person opening it, as once opened it would break the wax seal.So not only are they steeped in history, but today they make a wonderful pendant that is as unique as they are beautiful.
This one was made in 9 carat rose gold in the Victorian period of the 1890’s and has such a wonderful warm rose colour to the gold that highlights the beautiful design that is so attractive and will look so elegant on a necklace.
With the base set with carnelian that compliments the rose gold so well, it has a wonderful and very unique intaglio of an elephant over a tree with a cross on each side.
The base measures 2.5cm by 2cm by 3cm in height, and no matter if this is worn on a chain or even a bracelet, there is no doubt that it will always be a wonderful addition to any piece of jewellery.

What were seals used for?
Going back as far as Roman times, after a letter was sealed with wax, the writer would stamp the still warm wax with his or her seal to prevent the wrong person from opening the letter, as once broken, the wax seal could not be used again.
