Aquamarine and diamond ring from the 1920's

This ring is spectacular and has all the charm and character of the 1920's Art Deco era of when it was made, and will always be loved and admired each and every time that it is worn.

Hand made entirely in platinum, in the centre sits a magnificent 1.97 carat aquamarine that has such a beautiful blue colour and works perfectly with the pure white of the platinum.

Then surrounding the aquamarine are twelve smaller single cut diamonds, with one larger early brilliant cut diamond set on each "corner". These diamonds come together to total 0.36 carats and are beautifully millgrain set which can be seen as the elegant crimping around the setting. This was a popular design in Art Deco jewellery and adds an extra element of charm and character to the ring.

The setting measures 14mm by 14mm and is set on a lovely smooth band, and with an elegant setting even under the ring, this ring is truly breathtaking.

Aquamarine and diamond ring from the 1920's

Aquamarine and diamond ring hand made in platinum and set with single cut diamonds.

When was the Art Deco period?

It is generally accepted that the Art Deco era was from 1920 until 1940. Having said that, there are a few publications that will say that it started at the end of World War One in 1918, and lasted until the 1950's. However as the Art Deco movement is defined by its style, rather than the reign of a monarch, a few years one way or the other shouldn't be the argued.

What is a single cut diamond?

These are small diamonds usually around 0.01 carats to 0.05 carats in size. They are often found on the shoulders of rings or surrounding a centre stone for example. While today modern technology will allow for a 0.01 carat diamond to have 58 facets and be a round brilliant cut diamond, single cut diamonds were used from the later part of the 19th Century up until around the 1930's-1940's. Commonly found with eight facets on the top (the crown) and eight facets on the bottom (the pavilion) these are sometimes found with total facets between 16 to 18.

In recent years there has been such a resurgence for genuine antique cut diamonds, especially for antique engagement rings. Many people realise that there is such a charm and character about antique cut diamonds. And although the reality is that they don't sparkle as great as a modern round brilliant cut diamond, antique cut diamonds have a style and character all of their own that can never be matched.
