Art Deco tourmaline and sapphire negligee necklace

A negligee necklace is a design that has two drop sections of different lengths. This design was very popular in the Art Deco era of the 1920's when this particular negligee necklace was made, and it remains as breathtaking today as when it was made.

Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and platinum, in the centre is a magnificent cushion cut pink tourmaline that measures 2.50 carats in weight and has the most delightful colour to it that really stands out from near or far.

Then suspended below the tourmaline, are two sapphires, adding to the charm and character of this piece, on is a green rectangle cut sapphire that measures 0.40 carats, and one pentagonal shaped blue sapphire that measures 0.58 carats. The way that all three gemstones are their own unique shape adds to the allure of just why Art Deco jewellery such as this is so stylish, and this will surprise so many when they discover that it was made over 100 years ago, and still just how fashionable it is today.

With the elegant gold and platinum chain measuring 40.5cm in length, this allows it to sit at the perfect length on the neckline where it will no doubt always be loved and admired.

Art Deco tourmaline and sapphire negligee necklace

Art Deco tourmaline and sapphire negligee necklace made in the 1920's in 18 carat gold and platinum.

What is a negligee necklace?

A negligee necklace, or just negligee, is one that has two vertical drop sections of different lengths. This design was very popular in the Art Deco era of the 1920's to the 1940's. Often negligee pendants will be found in gold or platinum, or a combination of both, and are often set with gemstones. Diamonds were a popular choice in an Art Deco negligee necklace, as was pearls.

When was the Art Deco period?

It is generally accepted that the Art Deco era was from 1920 until 1940. Some publications will say that it started after World War One in 1914, while others will say it lasted until the end of the 1940's. Unlike eras that are clearly defined as when a monarch is ruling such as Queen Victoria, eras that are described by style or designs have to be accepted as being more fluid in dates. The one thing that will generally unite such pieces of jewellery will be the overall design of the piece. Art Deco jewellery is commonly more geometric in design, whereas the later Retro period is usually more heavier and bolder in design.
