Antique illusion knot ring

Here is such a wonderful and whimsical antique ring that can not only fit in with other antique jewellery as well as modern jewellery, but will also be such a wonderful and interesting talking point.

Made in 1888 in 9 carat rose gold, the ring has a knot design in the centre that represented an unbreakable bond between two people, even this aspect of the ring is so charming, however it is the wonderful illusion aspect of the ring that makes it even so much more special.

Although it is difficult to see from the images as a camera only has one lens compared to our two eyes, the ring  measures 3.7mm wide at the back and when the ring is rotated around and viewed, thanks to the optical illusion created by the design, this part of the ring appears to get wider and thinner as it turns around. This will be such a fabulous talking point that will certainly surprise so many when they see it, and even more when they discover that the ring is well over 130 years old and still so exciting to wear.

This is such an amazing ring, and one that will certainly make everyone smile and talk about it when they see it.

Description

Antique illusion knot ring

Antique illusion knot ring made in Chester in 1888. This illusion ring is made in 9 carat rose gold, and incorporates a knot design.

What is an illusion ring?

An illusion ring, like the name implies, gives the illusion that the width changes. In reality, the width remains constant and thanks to the design it looks like it goes wider and thinner as it is rotated around the finger.

What is rose gold?

Gold is alloyed with other metals to both harden and sometimes alter the colour of the gold. Whereas pure gold is very bright yellow in colour, it is also quite soft and malleable. This makes it unsuitable for jewellery as it will often break or split. Other metals are added such as copper and silver to make it harder. not only will this make the gold jewellery more durable, it will also alter the colour. The yellow colour may "soften" in its tone, or adding copper can make it more of a warm rose colour.
