Many antique photo lockets are made in gold lined which is a layer of gold over base metal, however it is harder to find ones in solid gold, and even harder to find one in 15 carat gold, so here is a very unique and rare antique photo locket made in 15 carat gold in Birmingham in 1909.
15 carat gold was used in the United Kingdom from 1854 until 1931 making it harder to find as it was used for a relatively short time. Not only was this one made in 15 carat gold, but in the centre is a charming pearl that is so beautifully and elegantly star set adding to the charm and elegance of this locket.
Able to hold two photos inside, the locket measures 24.7mm in diameter, and is perfect to wear on a simple gold chain, or something larger such as an Albert chain to make a wonderful statement.

This antique locket with a pearl was made in 15 carat gold and is set with a natural pearl on the front.
What is 15 carat gold?
15 carat gold (along with 9 carat gold) was used by the Commonwealth countries from 1854 until 1931. After this, the standard went to keeping three gold carats - 9, 14 and 18 carat gold. 14 carat gold was used to replace 15 carat gold to keep in line with European countries who often used both 18 and 14 carat gold.
