Antique sterling silver Aesthetic movement photo locket

$1,300.00

The aesthetic movement of the Victorian era, was the Western take on both art of Japan as well as a move against the more traditional Victorian jewellery and style, and this can be seen here in this gorgeous antique locket of the 1880's.

Made in sterling silver, the locket measures 37.7mm across by 46.5mm or 63.7mm to the top of the large bail and will easily fit on a multitude of necklace styles as well as a collar.

The front is the real pièce de résistance with such an incredible scene that will have you admiring it every time you pick it up to put it around your neck. With a scene incorporating a bird and trees, it also has bamboo and a crane, both of which are synonymous with Japan. The detail is so beautiful to admire and is highlighted with a very elegant border.

Inside the locket will be able to hold two photos, making it so personal once these images are places inside.

Still in wonderful condition even after more than 100 years have passed, this is a wonderful antique photo locket that will always be a talking point.

Description

Antique sterling silver Aesthetic movement photo locket

The aesthetic movement is an era that is difficult to pin-point when exactly it started, however it is generally seen as a move away from "traditional" Victorian jewellery. Considered to have started around the 1860's, it is made all the more difficult to identify as it has a lot of styles similar in nature to the later Art Nouveau era. Luckily hallmarking of British pieces makes it easier to identify, aesthetic jewellery took influences from nature and artists such as William Morris. Coincidentally at this time, Japonesque jewellery came into fashion, with jewellers taking their inspiration from of course Japan. This may be as simple as a bangle in the form of bamboo, to lockets with birds and animals as well as fans, with a definitive Japanese theme and style.
