It is truly astonishing to think that not only was this pocket watch made 230 years ago, but is still working and is so breathtaking to admire from the front as well as inside to see the magnificent movement.
Made in the 1790's by the watchmaker Pierre Rigaud in Switzerland, the silver gilt case which has a lovely warm yellow tone to it, measures 50.3mm across by 76mm to the op of the bow, and feels amazing to hold. With a great size and heft to it, there is nothing quite like holding a genuine antique pocket watch in the palm of your hand.
The dial is so attractive with its enamel scene on the outside with a woman in the foreground and two men working the fields on the other side. With the dial displaying numerals which are pointed to by those gorgeous fancy hour and minute hands, even the condition of the dial is a testament to the quality of what could be produced hundreds of years ago.
Inside the pocket watch is an incredible fusee verge movement that has come back from a full service and runs surprisingly accurately. While never destined to be a chronometer grade movement, it is astonishing how accurate this pocket watch is, with all of the movement being made all those years ago, and comes complete with our twelve month warranty.
Perfect for a collector, or that hard-to-buy for person as a very special gift, this 18th century pocket watch will always be appreciated and such a wonderful and amazing conversation starter.

Antique verge fusee pocket watch made in the 1790's by Pierre Rigaud
The verge escapement (also known as a crown wheel) is the earliest known type of mechanical escapement found in clocks and pocket watches. At the heart of it, it is the mechanism that controls its rate by allowing the gear train to advance at regular intervals or ‘ticks’. A fusee (from the French fusée, wire wound around a spindle) is a cone-shaped pulley with a helical groove around it, wound with a cord or chain which is attached to the mainspring barrel.
