Antique Victorian era diamond ring with an incredible setting

Not only does this ring sit so beautiful and flat on the finger, but it will also surprise so many when they discover that it is over 130 years old and still looks as amazing today as when it was made.

Hand made in 18 carat gold, the ring is set with the very early mine cut diamonds which were the cut even before the European cut diamond. Often called "cushion cut" diamonds due to their some-what rounded sides resembling a cushion, the diamonds come together total 1.79 carats and all sparkle magnificently.

Not only are the diamonds wonderful to admire, but the setting that each are set into is so beautiful to see. Sunken down into the gold band, each is highlighted by a fancy carved out section and bead that adds to the charm and character of the ring.

Measuring 7.3mm wide at the centre and tapering down to 3.5mm wide at the back, this is a fabulous example of an antique ring that will suit any finger and for any occasion.

Description

Antique Victorian era diamond ring with an incredible setting

This antique diamond engagement ring is set with five antique mine cut diamonds. Hand made in 18 carat yellow gold, it was made in the late Victorian era of the 1890's.

A brief history on the mine cut diamond:

At the start of the 18th century, a great leap forward emerged with the "invention" of the new 58-facetted diamond. At the time, these were the closest resemblance to today's brilliant cut, and are referred to as old mine cuts, or old miners. These were cut often squarish or cushion shaped, with quite a steep angle on the crown and pavilion, to maximise weight retention. As well as these features, the "old miners" often had quite a large culet or "collet", the horizontal base formed by the blunting of a point when the stone is cut as a brilliant.

During the mid 19th century, the old European cut came into focus, and was an attempt to change the old mine cut stones into a more perfect round cut. These stones can be considered as the first true round brilliant cut diamonds. The facets from the old miners were kept in their same position, but changed shape to a more round and evenly shaped stone.

The culets became smaller, as it was realised that light could "leak" out from this point in the stone. The development of the modern brilliant cut occurred in the early part of the 20th century with further modifications through the century.
