Antique Whitby Jet bracelet made in the Victorian era
When Prince Albert died in 1861, Queen Victoria went into perpetual mourning and wore only black for the rest of her life. This included jewellery such as Whitby Jet, which is dense black in colour. As Queen Victoria was so influential in fashion during her reign, she popularised Whitby Jet jewellery making it so popular and sought after.
A brief history on Whitby jet:
Whitby Jet is a fossilized material of a tree called the Araucaria Tree also known as the Monkey Puzzle tree and is dense black in colour, which is where the term “Jet black” came from. Found since 10,000 BC in countries such as Poland, France, Spain and Germany, the best material has always come from the town of Whitby in England.
The colour and texture of Whitby Jet is just beautiful to touch and admire, and was very popular in during the late Victorian period of the 1880’s and 1890’s era when this White Jet necklace was made.
