The Art Deco era of the 1920’s through to the 1940’s resulted in some fabulous designs that are so elegant and beautiful such as these earrings, that are made even more exciting by being set with natural pearls.
Whereas today pearls are made by having a bead inserted into an oyster resulting in a cultured pearl being produced by the oyster. A natural pearl is where an irritant such as a grain of sand gets inside the oyster and over time the oyster will build up a layer of nacre around it making it not only smooth, but producing a natural pearl. it is estimated that a natural pearl is produced in between 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 oysters, making them exceedingly rare, and just look at the tassels made from pearls in these earrings.
Made in platinum in the 1920’s, each earring measures a very elegant 62mm in length and each is set with a pearl at the top with five rose cut diamonds leading down to one at the top of a very intricate setting that holds the pearls. This setting will take your breath away with all the detail, and each one is set with an additional twenty four rose cut diamonds. These diamonds total 0.30 carats and add the right amount of sparkle to highlight the intricate setting and elegance of their design.
The there are the tassels set with all of those natural pearls. In total there are 325 natural pearls which makes these earrings even more special and unique. The time needed to collect all of these pearls and make the earrings would have been immense and shows just how much time, attention and care went into hand making these earrings all those years ago.
Fitted with secure shepherd hooks with a locking catch, these are a magnificent pair of Art Deco earrings that are destined to be loved, admired and cherished.

What are natural pearls?
When an oyster gets an irritant inside such as a grain of sand, over time it will build up a layer of nacre around it. Over time this makes it smooth resulting in a pearl. A cultured pearl is one that has someone place a bead carefully inside a pearl. The oyster is then returned to the water for two to four years, giving time for the oyster to cover this bead with nacre. This has been the way pearls are now produced since the late 20th Century when Kokichi Mikimoto started to commercially produce cultured pearls. It is estimated that a natural pearl is produced in between 1 in 5,000 to 1 in 10,000 oysters, making them exceedingly rare.
