The detail in this brooch combined with the use of the rare green gold, show just how much time and attention to detail went into making this brooch well over 100 years ago making it as beautiful today as when it was made.
Dating from the late Victorian times of the mid-1890's, the brooch measures 43.4mm by 29mm and will no doubt be admired from near or far.
Made in sterling silver, the floral design on the wings are highlighted in both rose gold for the flower petals and green gold for the leaves. Gold can be made in different colours by being alloyed with other metals, such as rose gold which is made by primarily adding more copper to the gold when being alloyed, and today although not very common, green gold is made by adding silver to the gold, however the green colour is more a soft green-yellow colour. However when this brooch was made, cadmium was added resulting in a stronger colour. Although never a strong green such as yellow or white gold, the tone of green in antique pieces is more pronounced and adds such an incredible element that you simply will not get in modern jewellery.
This antique butterfly brooch is not just attractive, it is as unique as it is beautiful.

Sterling silver antique butterfly brooch with rose and green gold
This antique butterfly brooch highlighted with not only rose gold, but green gold.
What is green gold?
Gold is alloyed with other metals that results in producing different colours. Rose gold is made by primarily adding copper to the gold when being alloyed. This results in the lovely warm tone to it, and today green gold is made by adding silver to the gold, however the green colour is more a soft green-yellow colour. Years ago cadmium was added resulting in a stronger colour. While never a strong green such as yellow or white gold, the tone of green in antique pieces is more pronounced especially when set against sterling silver.
