Antique diamond lozenge shaped ring from the 1890's

$8,300.00

Lozenge rings have a magical way of accentuating the finger and add diamonds to the ring and you have a ring that not only looks so beautiful on the finger, but sparkles wonderfully for all to admire.

This antique diamond ring was made in the 1890's and was hand made in 18 carat yellow gold and silver. The reason why silver was used is that white gold was not yet invented and platinum, although already discovered, was not used in jewellery until around the same time as white gold in the early 1900’s.

In the centre sits a lovely 0.38 carat European cut diamond with one more above and below and twelve more around the border. These additional diamonds come together to total 1.06 carats making this ring certainly sparkle so beautifully.
The charm and character of genuine antique diamonds is unparalleled and adds to the charm and character of the ring even further.

Measuring 10.4mm across by 23.3mm, this is the perfect ring for any occasion.

Description

Antique diamond lozenge shaped ring from the 1890's

This ring would make a perfect antique diamond engagement ring. It is set with antique European cut diamonds in a hand made setting. Made in 18 carat yellow gold and silver, the reason why silver was used is that white gold was not yet invented. Platinum, although already discovered, was not used in jewellery until around the same time as white gold in the early 1900’s.

What is a European cut diamond?

During the mid 19th century, the old European cut came into focus, and was an attempt to change the old mine cut stones into a more perfect round cut. These stones can be considered as the first true round brilliant cut diamonds. The facets from the old miners were kept in their same position, but changed shape to a more round and evenly shaped stone.

The culets became smaller, as it was realised that light could leak out from this point in the stone. The development of the modern brilliant cut occurred in the early part of the 20thcentury with further modifications through the century. Diamond cutters apply the brilliant cut to other shapes, and this very exacting skill continues to enthrall craftsman and enthusiasts alike.
