Today Cartier manufactures, designs, sells very fashionable watches, leather goods, accessories and jewellery. It was founded in the mid-19th Century by Louis-Francois Cartier in 1847. He very quickly became famous for producing fabulous jewellery for the very well to do, including the Royal Family of France.
In 1874, his son Alfred took over and expanded the business to be able to include more time and effort in creating watches which was only lightly dealt in by his father.
At the end of the 19th century in 1899, his son Louis Cartier became heavily involved in the business, and as he was very passionate about mechanical wrist and pocket watches, wanted the company to start producing their own timepieces.
After meeting Brazilian pilot Alberto Santos-Dumont in 1904 who told him of the problems with unreliable pocket watches that he used in the cockpit, Cartier produced a flat wristwatch with a square bezel which was unheard of or seen previously. The Cartier de Santos Galbee Automatic has remained in production even to this day.
In 1912, the Tortue and the Cartier Baignoire were introduced and then in 1917 the infamous and still ever classic and popular Cartier Tank was shown to the world which was an instant hit. This was followed by the waterproof watch case introduced in 1932 for the Pasha which was very popular.
Different kinds of wristwatches have been developed by Cartier. Its classic collections include:
Calibre de Cartier
Ligne 21 de Cartier
Pasha de Cartier
Santos de Cartier Tonneau
Unlike many watch companies today, all of these models are still being produced today, which are guaranteed to feel, look, and perform exactly like the original productions.
