Going back as far as Roman times, after a letter was sealed with wax, the writer would stamp the still warm wax with his or her seal to prevent the wrong person from opening the letter, as once broken, the wax seal could not be used again. Remaining popular all through the Georgian and Victorian periods right up to the Edwardian era, the look of seals are always so unique to one another and look wonderful on a necklace where they are commonly worn today. And this one is even more special, as it is not only a very attractive seal, but it also contains a secret locket compartment set into the base. Made in 9 carat rose gold in the late 1800's, the design itself is so attractive and measures 3.2cm tall and the base 2.2cm by 1.8cm. The base is set with carnelian which has a lovely colour to it that is complimented so well by the rose gold, and once people see that there is a locket under, it will truly amaze them. As exciting today as when it was made, this antique seal locket will always be such a wonderful talking point. Stock# ES9601 Circa: 1890 $Sold.

Here is a truly magnificent and exceptional antique locket that dates from the late Victorian era of the 1890's and is so unique and like no other and will certainly be such a wonderful talking piece that will always be loved and admired every time that it is worn. Measuring 34mm across by 45mm or 57.5mm to the top of the bail, on the front is an image of a woman playing a flute sitting next to a turtle. This is such an exquisite depiction and one that will have you admiring it every time it is around your neck. With fine hand engraving of a body of water, tree and a small hill, both the woman and the turtle are highlighted in rose and the rare green gold. Gold is alloyed with other metals that results in producing different colours. Rose gold is made by primarily adding copper to the gold when being alloyed resulting in the lovely warm tone to it, and today when green gold is made the green colour is more a soft green-yellow colour. However years ago cadmium was added resulting in a stronger colour. While never a strong green such as yellow or white gold, the tone of green in antique pieces is more pronounced especially when set against sterling silver. Able to hold two photos inside, this antique locket is as beautiful as it is unique and once photos are placed inside, this will become so much more personal and special. Made in the late 1800's, there is no doubt that this antique niello locket is so stark and magnificent to admire from near or far, and once photos of people close to you are placed inside, this will become an even more special and very sentimental piece of antique jewellery to wear with pride. Contrary to popular thought, niello is actually not an enamelling technique, rather it is a blackening technique produced as an alloy of sulfur with copper, silver and lead. Once produced it is then used to fill the channels that have been previously engraved into the metal, and after a few more steps including polishing, the result is a wonderful contrast of colours in often a beautiful design as can be seen on the front of this locket. The design is spectacular and a testament to the craftsmanship of what could be produced all those years ago. Perfect to be worn any time of the day or night and for any occasion, the locket measures 25.8mm across by 33.6mm or 46.1mm to the top of the bail. Able to hold two photos inside, this will certainly always continue to be loved and cherished. Stock# ES7856 Circa: 1890 $Sold.
There is something so beautiful about antique photo lockets, from the design down to the detail, as well as the symbolism many used in the design, such as this beautiful antique photo locket that has a bunch of grapes on one side. Made in 15 carat gold in the late Victorian period of the 1890's, both sides to this beautiful locket look so beautiful and have been expertly and exquisitely hand engraved. The immense amount of time needed to hand engrave this locket would have been incredible and is a testament to the quality and attention to detail that was put into this locket. Grapes are believed to have been the forbidden fruit of the Tree of Knowledge in the Garden of Eden, and they have been said to signify fertility, sacrifice, hospitality, and charity. It as said that to dream of grapes foretold to the maiden that her husband will be cheerful and if the dreamer was in love, the grapes foretold of a speedy union, with much happiness in the marriage. It is because of this, grapes will often be seen in antique jewellery in not only Victorian jewellery, but even pieces much earlier. Measuring 28mm across by 33.5mm, this is the perfect size to be able to wear all the time and inside it will hold two photos. With such beautiful engraving on both sides, it truly will not matter which side is facing forward when being worn, as each are so beautiful to admire from near or far - indeed the closer you get to it, the more you can appreciate how much detail there is. Its incredible to think that this was made well over 100 years ago, and is not only still in wonderful condition, but just as beautiful today as when it was made. Stock# ES8836 Circa: 1890 $Sold.
